The Stony Brook softball team fell short on Wednesday against Sacred Heart University 8-7. Despite sophomore infielder Nicole Hagerty’s three RBIs and three hits from freshman outfielder Shayla Giosia, the Seawolves needed one more run.
SBU (31-12-1) broke the ice in the top of the second with Hagerty’s three RBI bases loaded double into the left-center field gap.
But Sacred Heart (19-30) scored eight unanswered runs to take a big lead into the final inning. Carley Rudloff, the first basemen of Sacred Heart, had four RBIs and three hits in the win.
In the sixth, freshman designated hitter Lauren Kamachi started it off with an RBI single. Two errors made the game 8-6 and then Giosia knocked in a clutch single. But, with the tying run in scoring position, Sacred Heart was able to convert a groundout to end the game.
Wednesday was supposed to be a double header, but, due to a rain delay, the second game was cancelled.
