Stony Brook men’s lacrosse falls to Yale

After scoring only once in the first half, No. 20 Yale stormed back in the second half, defeating Stony Brook in overtime 9-8 at LaValle Stadium Monday night.

Greg Mahony led the Bulldogs with three goals, including the game-winner at the 2:54 mark in overtime. The goal was scored shortly after Stony Brook was penalized for having too many men on the field.

“I’d have to go back to the film,” head coach Jim Nagle said when asked about the penalty. “I can’t comment on it right now.”

Stony Brook had pulled ahead 4-1 by the end of the first half, led by senior Russ Bonanno’s two goals.

After sophomore Matt Bellando scored at the 12:32 mark to give Stony Brook a 5-1 advantage, Yale began chipping away at the Seawolves’ lead.

By the end of the third quarter, goals from Matt Gibson (2) and Mahony cut the lead to one.

Yale’s Deron Dempster tied the game 7-7 at the 6:33 mark of the fourth quarter, and Mahony gave Yale its first lead of the game at the 2:42 mark.

Red-shirt freshman Mike Rooney tied the game 52 seconds later to force the game into overtime.

The loss drops Stony Brook to a 1-8 record in out-of-conference play.

“We didn’t really play great offense, particularly in the third quarter, and we ended up playing too much defense,” Nagle said.

Stony Brook resumes conference play Saturday night against Hartford. The Seawolves are currently tied for first place in the America East standings, and have already clinched a spot in the four-team conference tournament.

“Everyone’s upset that we lost, but in the big picture, this game isn’t as important as the games coming up,” Rooney said.
