With a new head coach and the loss of offensive stars Kevin Crowley and Jordan McBride to graduation, Stony Brook lost its opening game to Fairfield 13-10.
“I wasn’t real happy with the team’s performance today,” head coach Jim Nagle said in a press release. “We saw some good things today, but it’s going to take some time, and the guys understand that.”
Redshirt freshman Mike Rooney lead Stony Brook with three goals. Senior Robbie Campbell and junior Jeff Tundo, a transfer from Ohio State, had two goals each.
After Stony Brook jumped out to a 4-2 lead 12 minutes into the game, Fairfield’s Sam Snow scored two goals in a span of 44 seconds to even the score.
Stony Brook would take a 6-5 into the half after goals from senior Russ Bonanno and Campbell in the second quarter.
Fairfield, however, would break the game open with a four-goal run in the five first minutes into the third quarter. Stony Brook would get no closer to within two goals for the rest of the game.
Junior Sean Brady, a transfer from Duke, made 13 saves in the losing effort.
With a new head coach and the loss of 70 percent of its scoring from last year, Nagle said before the game that the team is still adjusting and finding chemistry.
“In the grand scheme, we’re new, our goal for now is to try to get better,” Nagle said.
He still feels though that the team has plenty of talent.
“Our goal is to win the America East championship and get into the national tournament,” Nagle stated.
