For the first time in three years, the Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team found themselves facing Binghamton on Tuesday, April 19. The Seawolves picked up right where they left off.

Stony Brook (11-2, 4-0 AE) extended its win streak to nine games as midfielder Ellie Masera and attacker Kailyn Hart played up to expectations, combining for 12 goals in the 18-3 blowout.

To reinforce that the Seawolves are in a league of their own, they have outscored their opponents by a combined 54-10 in their last three games, all against America East opponents.

The inside of the arc welcomed midfielder Kyla Zapolski with the first goal off of a save from Binghamton’s goalie. Barely two minutes later, the fifth-year player made another goal to continue the Seawolves’ strong start.

Binghamton tried to hover in the cage, but the Seawolves’ defense stepped in to send it back over to Masera for her 45th goal of the season. The sophomore continued on with another fast shot over Binghamton goalie Emily Manning’s head, making the score 4-0.

The first quarter came to a close in favor of Stony Brook, when in the last two minutes, midfielder Siobhan Rafferty scored the fifth goal of the game. Rafferty locked in two career highs with five ground balls and four caused turnovers, compared to her four ground balls against UAlbany in February 2021 and three caused turnovers on April 9 when the Seawolves went against New Hampshire.

Hart banked in her first of six goals off of an assist from attacker Morgan Mitchell to make it 6-0.

Into the second quarter, Binghamton found some energy to score its first goal of the game. However, prior to this — solidifying a hat trick — Masera scored another goal for the Seawolves to show the fight was still on.

In response to the Bearcats’ efforts, Hart ran in fast through the arc, making another goal for the Seawolves. Hart continued off of an assist from defender Clare Levy on the right side, where she flew in for the goal.

Levy scooped five ground balls as a career best, compared to her previous high of four during a game against Rutgers in May 2021.

In the third quarter, Hart made a shot angled at the ground as the ball bounced past the shoulder of Manning for an 11-2 lead.

Masera made a one-on-one goal and three minutes later, the midfielder repeated the previous play to bring the Seawolves to 13-2. Masera grew her scoring streak to 10 per game, while her point streak increased to 13.

Ending the quarter, midfielder Molly LaForge joined in on the scoring glory, scoring her third goal of the season by tapping the ball into the net.

With the game out of reach, midfielder Lexie Correia made a move when, assisted by attacker Giana Murphy to the net, she got her first goal of the season. It was Correia’s first score since a February 2020 game against Ohio State as well as Murphy’s first collegiate point.

Masera’s six goals for the game matched her personal best against Hofstra on March 18, while Hart broke her previous career high.

The Seawolves will return home to Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Saturday, April 23 against UMBC at 6 p.m.
