In a season filled with production from unforeseen sources, it appears the Stony Brook softball team has its latest breakout star.

Freshman right fielder Alyssa Costello — fresh off a conference Player of the Week award for her dominance at last week’s Rutgers Tournament — hit a three-run home run and an RBI single during the Seawolves’ 7-0 win at Hofstra on March 22. Costello, who went 3-for-4, was one of five Stony Brook batters with multiple hits as the team combined for a season-high 12 hits. 

Pitcher Dawn Bodrug, not one to be outdone by the offense, had a season-high 15 strikeouts and allowed four hits in her third complete game with no earned runs this year.

“We played a good ballgame today and it was great to see us put all three parts of the game together,” head coach Megan T. Bryant said in a press release. “Our defense was solid, Dawn was in control and our offense continues to be productive. We are getting more comfortable at the plate and everyone is contributing.”

Costello led off the scoring in the second inning with a single that plated catcher Corinne Badger. She scored soon after along with first baseman Lindsey Osmer on a hard single from left fielder Shauna Nuss.

Bodrug struck out eight of the first 12 batters she faced to preserve Stony Brook’s 3-0 head start going into the fourth, where second baseman Kyra McFarland’s single extended the lead. 

Costello’s home run came on a shot straight down center field in the fifth inning, capitalizing on a double from Badger and a single from Osmer to essentially close out the game.

Since beginning the season 1-for-7, Costello has hit .538 over her last seven games. Her .839 slugging percentage and .484 on-base percentage lead the team, even given Badger’s nine home runs. 

McFarland, though, is in the middle of a 2-for-24 slump after breaking out as a freshman last year, with three games remaining until Stony Brook opens conference play against Maine on April 2.
