Blizzard hits Stony Brook, bringing deep snow and wind gusts

Tabler Community was covered in snow at night on Jan. 28. There is a predicted rate of 2 to 3 inches of snowfall until 7 p.m. KAT PROCACCI/THE STATESMAN

A powerful blizzard hit Long Island last night and will continue into the evening with wind gusts as high as 55 miles per hour and an extra 5 to 8 inches of snow expected, according to the National Weather Service

Snow will continue to fall at a rate of 2 to 3 inches until 7 p.m., according to estimates. Suffolk County will remain under a blizzard warning until then. Over a foot of snow is currently on the ground.

The New York State Police ask that residents avoid unnecessary travel until the snow stops and roads are cleared to avoid accidents.

Stony Brook University canceled all Saturday classes last night, including the main, Southampton and Manhattan campuses. West and East Side dine-in will run on an adjusted schedule, while all other dining locations will remain closed today.
