Stony Brook Athletics announced the resumption of its television deal with SportsNet New York (SNY) on Monday, Nov. 15. The media network will broadcast 13 combined Stony Brook men’s and women’s basketball games during the 2021-22 season.

“This expanded partnership with SNY is an important example of our commitment to increasing exposure for our institution,” Director of Athletics Shawn Heilbron said in a press release. “SNY gives us a powerful linear television platform upon which to shine an even brighter spotlight on Stony Brook.”

Stony Brook first signed a media contract with SNY in 2019, which broadcasted some home football and basketball games. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the partnership was paused, but in September 2020, SNY aired multiple replays of multiple 2019 Stony Brook football games.

Six men’s basketball games, starting with Dec. 4’s matchup against the Wagner Seahawks, will be aired. Seven women’s basketball games, beginning with a contest against the Marist Red Foxes on Dec. 7, are on the slate. The broadcasts will intermittently air until late February 2022.

The deal comes as massive hype builds around both Stony Brook men’s and women’s basketball. Stony Brook became the first school since Boston University to have both its basketball teams picked to win the America East Conference in the preseason polls. The Seawolves’ women’s basketball team is already off to a 3-0 start, including a decisive victory over Big East program St. John’s.

The men’s games broadcasted also include the annual Battle of Long Island against Hofstra on Dec. 11, Saint Peter’s on Dec. 18 and conference matchups versus Hartford on Feb. 19 and Albany on Feb. 26. For the women’s team, there is also a non-conference bout against Penn on Dec. 10 along with five conference games — Binghamton on Jan. 19, NJIT on Feb. 5, Maine on Feb. 12, UMBC on Feb. 16 and UMass Lowell on Feb. 23.

SNY is best known for being the primary network for the New York Mets. Its reach extends throughout the tri-state area and northeastern Pennsylvania and can be viewed in 9 million households nationwide. Mets owner Fred Wilpon holds a significant stake in the network and Spectrum of Charter Communications and Comcast via NBC Sports.
