The Stony Brook women’s basketball team seems to have found their groove, having now taken down the Hartford Hawks in a season sweep on the road during Jan. 30 and 31. The dominating weekend performance helped the Seawolves improve their overall record to 10-4 on the year with an impressive 8-2 conference record.
On Saturday, the Seawolves handled their business on the road early and often en route to their 67-47 win. Stony Brook shot 43% from the field and made seven three-pointers. Senior forward India Pagan put in work, dropping 18 points off a ridiculously efficient 78% (7-for-9) from the field.
Meanwhile, the junior guard combo of Asiah Dingle and Anastasia Warren dropped 10 and nine points respectively, while senior guard Jonae Cox added another eight. Hartford never led throughout the entire game.
“I thought we shared the ball very well today, and I’m proud of our unselfish offensive play,” head coach Caroline McCombs said in a postgame press release on Saturday. “We also used our depth again. I’m just encouraged to keep playing because our best basketball is yet to come.”
Then, on Sunday, the Seawolves doubled up off another big performance from Pagan and Dingle, winning 62-49. With 19 points on 67% (9-for-15) shooting from the field, Pagan ended her weekend with 37 points on 16-for-24 shooting in two straight games.
Dingle decorated the score sheet with a multi-category performance: 12 points, four rebounds, six assists, five steals and a block.
The Seawolves again played with a lead for nearly the entire game and were able to earn the series sweep despite making just one three-pointer on the afternoon.
“Back-to-back games on the road are definitely challenging,” McCombs said in a postgame press release after Sunday’s victory. “I was proud of our ability to lock in defensively when we were struggling to make jump shots. India really stepped up for us this weekend, and it was good to see her in that flow.”
Pagan and Dingle are the only Seawolves to average over double digits in scoring, with 10.8 and 10.5 points per game, respectively.
With their impressive outings in the past weeks, Stony Brook currently ranks second in the America East behind Maine, who the Seawolves have not faced this season. The focus now turns to rival UAlbany and the Great Danes, who will travel to Island Federal Arena to take on the Seawolves on Feb. 6 and 7.
