The Stony Brook Mall Walkers program, co-sponsored by Stony Brook University Hospital and Smith Haven Mall, relaunched on Jan. 26 with roughly 30 participants.
Moves such as these are often met with praise and excitement, especially considering that 67 percent of American women are considered “plus-size” or wear a size 14 and upwards.
Being a Stony Brook University resident student is not at all an isolating experience. Suffolk Transit buses take students to off-campus locations such as Smith Haven Mall and grocery stores, and university buses do the same on weekends. The new 7Bus, stationed at the Student Activities Center, stops at various locations in New York City. And the Long Island Rail Road is right on-campus as well, taking students all over Long Island and to NYC. The LIRR also takes students to Port Jefferson’s Main Street hub. With a five to 10 minute train ride, students can wander the numerous shops and restaurants there.
It seems like the costumes you can buy at those pop-up Halloween stores are getting increasingly expensive, and are of such low quality that they end up in tatters halfway through their first Halloween party.
Let’s face it. Stony Brook is not a college town. Then again, most schools renowned for their science and math programs are not making the Princeton Review list of party schools. But the issue here is not just curriculum. The infrastructure for such a prospect simply is not there.
It is that time of year when first-year students are welcomed to Stony Brook University to—as the banners around campus say—begin this “incredible journey” in their academic careers.
