New York Sea Grant, a cooperative program of Cornell University and the State University of New York, has awarded over $2.1 million to support six coastal science research projects, three of which are being led by Stony Brook University faculty. 

Recorded in breeding pairs, researchers found the total numbers of pairs to be 52,786 — nearly 60% less of their total of 122,550 pairs in 1971.
