#OPINION: “Bring back manly men,” tweeted conservative author, Candace Owens, on Nov. 14. When first reading this tweet, my eyes transfixed on the words “manly man.”
Stony Brook University welcomed Dr. Sandro Bellassai, author and professor of Gender Studies and European History at the University of Bologna in Italy, to present his seminar, “The Disappearance of the Invisible Man,” on Sept. 18.
Stony Brook University’s undergraduate population is 53 percent male and 47 percent female. The split is not 50/50, but it is close enough to be even. Still, in terms of classroom participation, there seems to be an overwhelming presence of male voices.
This is a great direction for the university to pursue and is a development that will greatly increase its image. While women’s studies uses the female gender to study history, politics and other social changes, the male gender should also have this equal opportunity.
