A dominating start helped the Stony Brook Seawolves to an impressive 11-7 win over the Denver Pioneers Sunday, and advanced the team to 2-1 on the year.
Last week’s America East Rookie of the Week Alyssa Cardillo led the team in scoring with 4 points, (1 goal, 3 assists), and senior midfielder Melissa Cook provided 3 goals. Two of those came late in the first half on free position shots, helping to nullify a pair of Denver goals that cut the lead to 7-4. The Seawolves led for all but 29 seconds of the game due in large part to their success on free position shots, (4 conversions in 5 tries). Stony Brook was able to cash in on an additional 2 opportunities by senior attacker Samantha Djaha and freshman midfielder Kaila Gottlick.
With just under 10 minutes left to play, Denver had scored consecutive goals to climb to within 10-6. Coach Allison Comito called a timeout, and the team seemed to find its collective legs again, stymieing the Pioneers attempt at a comeback. The Seawolves were actually outshot 27-16 by the Pioneers, relying heavily on the goalkeeping of Senior Mickey Cahill, who came up with a solid 10 saves. By contrast, the Pioneers turned to backup keeper Lauren Benner after a 5 goal outburst by the Wolves in the game’s first 11 minutes.
Women’s Lacrosse plays their next home game March 5, against Johns Hopkins.
