The Stony Brook University men’s soccer team (1-3-0) fell, 2-0, yesterday, to the University of South Florida (USF) Bulls (1-1-1), who won their first game of the season.
The Bulls were trying to win their first game at home since their 2-1 loss to Florida Gulf Coast on Sept. 1st. Before that game, USF had a 30-game home undefeated streak.
The Seawolves committed a foul 1:16 into the game, allowing Bulls senior Shawn Chin to score a goal on a free kick from 30-yards out. From there, the Bulls didn’t look back, partially due to a strong performance by All-American goalkeeper Jeff Attinella, who secured his 19th career shutout with six saves.
Danny Bonomini (Holbrook, N.Y.), goalkeeper for the Seawolves, also recorded six saves.
Stony Brook didn’t just come to watch. The Seawolves had some opportunities with 11 shots, six of which were on goal.
Wilber Bonilla (Brentwood, N.Y.) keep the pressure on Attinella with a hard shot in the 58th minute.
The Bulls put an unpleasant end to any thoughts of a Seawolf comeback when Bernardo Anor scored a penalty kick goal in the 74th minute. Both Anor and Chin took two shots for USF.
The Seawolves will next play in the Dartmouth Classic Tournament in Hanover, N.H., where they will face Holy Cross (0-2) and Dartmouth (1-0).
