I was shocked to read Paul Conrad’#146;s article, ‘Polity denies fundingto Pro-Choice group’ (April 22). Polity has apparently seized the powerto determine which political groups will receive Polity funding, which, unlessI’#146;m mistaken, is paid for by the mandatory fees of all undergraduates.
Student government ought to promote student political expression, not stifleit. The idea of funding only student groups which are unanimously supportedby the student body is absurd. Universally paid mandatory fees ought to funddiverse student expression. President Amanda Savitz’#146;s advice to other studentgroups on campus (‘Don’#146;t be controversial. This school doesn’#146;tlike it’) is ludicrous, and, frankly, un-American.
This is a public university subsidized by public funds; polity is funded bystudent fees. I hope that a boycott of the student activity fee will by organizedby undergraduate students’#151; including those who support the criminalizationof abortion but also support free speech. I also hope that Students for Choicewill consider legal action. It might be helpful to contact the New York CivilLiberties Union for advice or assistance.
