April 18, 2002 – The Stony Brook softball team (18-21) used solid pitchingto limit Sacred Heart (15-24) to just six hits on the afternoon as the Seawolvesearned two 2-0 victories for a sweep at University Field on Thursday afternoon.
Stephanie Poetzsch (14-11) allowed just four hits, no runs and no walks whilestriking out 12 in game one, which remained scoreless until the bottom of theseventh. Kristen Brust led off the inning by crushing a double to right centerfield, and she was sacrificed to third by Amanda Staschuk. Jane Stein followedwith her fourth homerun of the year to give the Seawolves the 2-0 victory.
Stein had two of the Seawolves’ four hits, while Sacred Heart’s Pam Vuijstwas a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate.
The win for Poetzsch marked the 30th in her career, which equals the StonyBrook record.
Both teams combined for just five hits in the second game, but the Seawolvescapitalized on some glaring errors by the Pioneers to pull ahead in the fourthinning. Stephanie DiBiase led off the bottom of the inning with a double toright center field, and she advanced to third on Colleen McCarthy’s groundout.Brust followed with a shot to right field that fell out of the glove of PioneerErin Caveney. With Brust safe at first, Caveney compounded the error by misfiringa throw to home plate, and DiBiase scored an unearned run for the 1-0 lead.
Shea Carpenter extended the lead to 2-0 with a two-out solo homerun in thefifth, her second dinger of the year, and the Seawolves held Sacred Heart atbay to earn their third shutout win in four outings.
Lindsey DeLaRosa (4-10) was solid on the mound, allowing just two hits, noruns and no walks with two strikeouts.
