The Stony Brook Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving team got off to a promising start when they jump started their season at the Husky Invitational at UConn last Friday. The Seawolves took on the University of Connecticut, Southern Connecticut and the University of Massachusetts.
On the men’s side, top finishers included sophomore Omer Ozcan who won the 100 yard Backstroke by more than three seconds. Ozcan comes off a promising freshman season where he placed in three different events at the 2006 America East Championships. The men’s team was also supported by Eben Coenen and Jack Schursky who placed fourth and fifth respectively in the 100 yard breaststroke.
Last year’s 100 and 200 yard backstroke America East champion Raphy Labour continued his domination with a third place finish in the 50 free. Ray Sato took fifth in the 200 breaststroke and Schursky took third in the Mixed 1000 yard freestyle.
On the women’s side, the freshmen were the story of the day. Rebecca Sayles kicked off the first event of the day with a fourth place finish in the first meet of her collegiate career. Sayles was followed up by fellow freshman Brittany Whipple who placed fourth in the 100 yard breaststroke. Jessica Peters and Shelby Mirabelli continued the drive, taking third and fifth in the 200 yard breaststroke.
The rest of the team was not to be outdone by the newest additions. Sophomore Lucy Liu finished fourth in the 200 yard butterfly while juniors Autumn Griggers and Courtney Teague placed sixth and seventh in the 100 yard freestyle.
The Seawolves relays were also well-represented with the women’s ‘A’ team finishing fifth in the 800 free relay. The men’s ‘A’ team took fourth in the same event to finish up the meet. The Seawolves are back in the pool this Saturday when they take on UMass at home.
