The women’s soccer game on Sunday, September 10th against Providence ended up being a heart-breaker. The last game of the Holiday Inn Express Invitational ended in a 0-0 tie for the Seawolves.
The game started off slow; with the Seawolves making a total of only one shot the whole first half. Providence only got off four shots. The second half brought some more exciting play. Many more shots were made on goal by both teams, with the Seawolves out-shooting the opposition by a 2:1 ratio. However, the real excitement was on the defensive end.
Goalkeeper, Marissa Viola made 15 saves during the match, beating her own personal record. Her phenomenal play throughout the game saved the Seawolves from defeat.
Fans got hopeful with a shot from Aria Tanzi, made with little more than one minute left in regulation play. However this shot ricocheted off the post and the Seawolves were forced into double overtime.
Neither team was able to convert a goal in overtime. Frustratingly in the last game of the tournament, ended in a tie. This game brings Stony Brook’s record to 4-1-1.
On a more cheerful note, three players from the Stony Brook team were named to the all-tournament team. Kristen Mishrell, Krista Shilts and Jackie Timms all brought this honor to the Seawolves. Three players from the Providence team were also named to the all-tournament team.
Marissa Viola also made the Seawolves proud when she garnered the title of America East Rookie of the Week. This marks the second week in a row a Stony Brook player was honored by the America East conference.
Brooke Barbuto was named Player of the Week last week. Viola was also named Women’s College Player of the Week by bigapplesoccer.com and Stony Brook Athlete of the Week. Way to go, Marissa!
