Friday marked the beginning of New York Fashion Week-my favorite time of year. Throughout the next few weeks the ready-to-wear and couture collections from our favorite top tier designers will be debuting around the world. But before the frenzy begins, let’s talk about fashion from the knee down’hellip;shoes, of course!
Last Spring designers like Christian Louboutin and Yves Saint Laurent made fashion waves with patent leather super high heels. Once they surfaced, they were spotted everywhere on every celebrity and fashionista. It’s only gotten better for the fall because more designers have jumped on the trend so there’s more of a selection in styles and prices. High fashion designers like Yves Saint Laurent and Jimmy Choo are, of course, still in demand but names like Nine West and Jessica Simpson have created patent leather styles that won’t break the bank (ranging from $70-$90). Stores like Aldo, Bakers, and 1000 Steps (Smithaven Mall) carry an assortment of shiny and polished patent leather heels, platforms, strappy sandals, and flats. Patent leather is a great choice because it’s fun, sexy and draws a great deal of attention to your feet. Pick an ensemble that isn’t too flashy, sparkly, or shiny–your shoes will be enough!
Boots are another fall favorite (as always). Last years cowboy boot has gracefully transcended into a lighter, perhaps more feminine, style. Boots this fall have more of a round toe and are featured in autumn-perfect brown, tan, dark green, and black. Once again, these are an easy find; department stores, local shoe stores, and designer labels will have a perfect boot. Another boot style, reminiscent of the two matching pairs my mom and I rocked in ’94: the ankle boot. Not quite as prominent as other boots styles, the ankle boot is popping up on a few runways and in Hollywood paired with casual, loose dresses or skirts and maybe even dark tights. Try it out, although this might not be for everyone.
Lastly, I know it’s still warm out and if you aren’t really feeling boots yet–flats are still a good choice. Since it’s fall, pack away the light colored, lightweight slippers you wore this summer and choose a sturdier, darker colored flat. Beige, brown, and black are good fall colors. I’m especially fond of the more neutral colors-I find them complimenting to fall colors but not too dark at the same time. So, go find a pair of skinny jeans that aren’t long enough for heels and slip into a pretty, fall-friendly, flat! Hurry’hellip;. do it before it snows!
