    Episode 2 [10/02/02]

    Transcript Excerpt

Host:’#9;’#9;On Tuesday, Sept. 24, Polity’#146;s Executive Council held a press conference,

in room 237 of the Student Union, to ‘get the record straight.’

The meeting was the first official press conference held by Polity Council this semester. Let’#146;s hear what they had to say.

    M. Morris:’#9;In every organization there are positive and negative aspects, and no

organization should be expected to be perfect.

Host:’#9;’#9;(nods approvingly) Alright’#133; Sounds reasonable, makes sense.

    M. Morris:’#9;As we accepted our positions, we already accept [sic] the duties and

    responsibilities that came with it.

Host:’#9;’#9;Good for you! Taking the responsibility that knowingly comes with the

    job.

    M. Morris:’#9;However, for the past month, we have been accepting more than our

    responsibilities demand.

    Host:’#9;’#9;Hmmm’#133; Whatever could she mean?

    M. Morris:’#9;We have accepted the blame for student unhappiness. We have accepted

the blame for the state of our organization.

Host:’#9;The state of student unhappiness’#133;? The state of their organization’#133;? Isn’#146;t that what the organization, that is, student government, is largely responsible for?

    M. Morris:’#9;We accepted numerous articles questioning the integrity of members of

    this organization.

Host:’#9;Actually, I know for a fact that those were editorials, not articles. Editorials’#133; Just like in every major newspaper in the country.

    M. Morris:’#9;Each and every issue you stated, each article you printed, has nothing to do with these newly elected council members.

    Host:’#9;Again, editorials–not articles. Editorials’#133; subjective. Articles’#133; objective.

    M. Morris:’#9;Instead of tearing the wound open, what we need is more support. The newspaper articles should read, ‘What said can students bring to help heal this organization. The newspaper articles should read, ‘What said can students bring to help heal this organization.’

Host:’#9;Ok, ok. Alright, hold up, hold up, hold up! Let me get this straight’#133; Government should tell the media what stories to cover? The government should decide what news is? ‘#133;Interesting.

‘#9;In a related story, Communist China has recently set up a nation-wide block of the internet search engine Altavista for ‘featuring political views that are disagreeable to the authorities.’
