April 30, 2002 – Junior first baseman Amanda Hallaway hit an RBI single withone out in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Hofstra Softball team ralliedfrom a 2-1 deficit to defeat Stony Brook 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon at HofstraSoftball Stadium. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelleddue to rain.
Hofstra (21-25) trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning underrainy conditions, but junior center fielder Heather Brousseau led off with abunt single to start the game-winning rally. Junior shortstop Danielle Stewartbunted Brousseau over to second, and sophomore catcher Meaghan Almon drew awalk to put runners on first and second.
Brousseau then came all the way around to score from second base on a wildpitch from Stony Brook starter Stephanie Poetzsch (16-15), while Almon advancedto third base. Hallaway then followed with a line drive single to left to breakthe tie and give the Pride the victory, its seventh straight and 11th in itslast 12 games.
Hofstra took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when junior second baseman JessicaLuna drew a bases-loaded walk off of Poetzsch for an unearned run. Hofstra starterSara DeAngelis (9-18) had a no-hitter going through 4.2 innings, but finallyhad it broken up by freshman second baseman Marissa Servello, who singled toleft with two outs in the fifth.
Stony Brook then had their bats awaken in the sixth with four straight hitsto take a 2-1 lead. Freshman right fielder Stephanie DiBiase started the rallywith a single, and freshman shortstop Colleen McCarthy followed with a singleas well to put runners on first and second.
Freshman first baseman Kristen Brust then followed with an RBI single to right-centerfield, but was thrown out trying to advance to second on the relay throw. Seniordesignated player Shea Carpenter then doubled to the wall in right-center toscore McCarthy with the go-ahead run.
DeAngelis allowed six hits, while striking out four and walking none to pickup her fourth straight win in the circle. Poetzsch struck out four and walkedthree for the Seawolves in a losing effort.
