Stony Brook’s women’s tennis team had its first action of the season this past week weekend, as they hosted the second annual Stony Brook Classic. The classic, which coach Gary Glassman called a “complete success,” featured schools such as Auburn University, University of Southern Mississippi, the University of Toledo, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Marist College, and Long Island University.
Freshman Katherine Hanson, who is among five other newcomers to the team, made a huge splash in the event, as she beat Fani Chiefcheva of Auburn in One on One Doubles on Sunday. According to Coach Glassman, Chiefcheva was ranked #9 in the country and lost in the semis of the NCAA’s last year.
“Katherine Hanson was the standout player of the weekend,” said Glassman.
Other freshman Salome Mkervalidze, Gayatri Krishnan, and Anna Pieschl also took home victories. Mkervalidze and Hanson won at the No. 1, Pieschl won with Senior Erica Federgreen at No. 2, while Krishnan won with sophomore Fanny Charliquart at No. 3. All the victories were vs. Marist on Friday. Krishnan and Hanson also won their singles matches vs. the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
“Mkervalidze, Krishnan, and Pieschl all showed that they have the potential to be big contributors to the squad this year,” said Coach Glassman.
The team’s next action will be this weekend, where they will play in the Eastern Collegiate Invitational.
“..The ladies are excited to hit the road and have another chance to compete this weekend,” said Coach Glassman.
On the Men’s side, the team will also be playing this weekend, as they will be playing in the UConn Invitational.
“The men had some really good results at the UConn tournament last year and we are looking to improve upon that performance,” said Coach Glassman.
