It was a few years ago when I was first put under the spell of Joshua Radin after watching Zach Braff’s film ‘The Last Kiss.’ While the film didn’t hold my attention like Braff’s ‘Garden State,’ its soundtrack did. I was immediately hooked on Radin’s ghost-like voice and delicate melodies.
Radin’s newest album, ‘Simple Times,’ was released on iTunes on Sept. 9 and will be released in stores on Sept. 30. By Sept. 11 it became the #1 album on the iTunes charts. It comes as no surprise though, since Radin’s debut album ‘We Were Here’ was prized by critics and having a fan base consisting of stars like Ellen DeGeneres and Zach Braff.
Following the path of ‘We Were Here,’ Radin creates a perfect blend of soft rock, pop and folk. Some critics compared Radin to Simon and Garfunkel after the release of his first album and with his new album, this has only grown truer. The folk sound that his songs possess have matured, making him more enjoyable to listen to. Songs like ‘I’d Rather Be with You’ and ‘Sky’ will catch the attention of any hopeless romantic. With the quirky lyrics of ‘Vegetable Car,’ the bright, hopeful ones of ‘Brand New Day,’ and the slightly melancholy words of ‘One of Those Days,’ there is a song for every emotion.
Patty Griffin and Meiko are featured on the album also. Their voices helped contribute an intimacy to the listener, although ‘We Were Here’ lacks this attribute.
After listening to the album multiple times, I don’t find much fault. With similarities between Jason Mraz and Jack Johnson, Radin is still able to put his own spin on things and has created a fresh new album that will appeal to many different people. The songs are catchy and vibrant and get better with every listen and will always leave a smile on your face.
