Although they gained more yards through the air than the Black Bears, the Seawolves were unable to stop the Maine pass attack when it mattered most.
Maine Quarterback Adam Farkes picked his spots and found his receivers in the end zone four times, leading the way to the Black Bears 28-13 victory. Farkes was 12-22 for only 148 yards, but the four scoring strikes were more than enough for his team.
Seawolves quarterback Dane Hoffman did his best to match Farkes, throwing 38 passes and completing 19 in the team’s comeback attempt. The Seawolves only touch down of the day came early in the first quarter when Hoffman found tight end Melaquan Saffold in the end zone from four yards out. Hoffman finished with 199 yards passing and two interceptions to go with the touchdown.
Hoffman was also able to spread the ball around to his receivers. Donald Lee, Dwayne Eley, and Michael Lepore all had four receptions. Lee led the group with 51 total yards, while Eley’s 28-yard catch on Stony Brook’s first drive was the longest play of the day for the Seawolves.
The Seawolves running game was not any more successful than its passing game. Conte Cuttino finished with a respectable 75 yards on 16 carries, but freshman sensation Edwin Gowins was shut down for the first time in his Stony Brook career. He was only able to gain 31 yards on his 15 carries.
Senior kicker Luke Gaddis was steady for the Seawolves throughout the game. He booted two field goals of 22 and 32 yards respectively, and made his only extra point attempt. He also continued his punting duties, and was able to drop one of his six punts inside the Maine 20 yard line.
Defensive linebackers Tyler Santucci and Carl Teague led the team. Santucci had 10 tackles, five of them solo, while Teague made six stops and had a sack that knocked Maine back nine yards.
The Seawolves will travel to Providence, R.I., to battle Brown at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20. The team plays host to Long Island rival Hofstra the week after, on Friday, Sept. 26.
