The Stony Brook volleyball team lost three close sets during its season opener to Iona College at the CCSU Blue Devil Invitational in New Britain, Connecticut on Friday August 29. The Seawolves were helped largely in part by senior Gulce Nazli Dikecligil all the way from Istanbul, Turkey. She accounted for a double-double by means of 13 kills and 13 digs. Stony Brook was left after this game 0-1 thus far for the season.
The team bounced back quickly the following day and won both of its matches Saturday night August 30, beating Bucknell in straight game sets, 3-0. The dominating scores where 25-18, 25-19, and 25-22. In the second match, they displayed nothing less than the first one with more stand out performances. The Seawolves won against Central Connecticut State University, 3-1, with scores of 39-37, 25-19, 23-25, and 25-22. Dikecligil and Jessica Graham from Eastport, New York were together named to the all-tournament team for that game. Stony Brook is all set to move on with their season at 2-1 overall.
Dikecligil and freshman setter Kelsey Sullivan from Hamilton, Virginia were named the America East Volleyball Player of the Week and Setter of the Week correspondingly. This is according to a release from the conference office on Tuesday afternoon.
The girls hit the road as Stony Brook continues their 2008 season on Thursday September 4 with a game in Kingston, Rhode Island against the University of Rhode Island set to start at 7:00 PM
