Ever wonder who those guys and girls walking around campus in orange colored jackets are?
They are students who try to and keep the campus safe from unauthorized entry. Basically, their job entails walking around residential halls and making sure that all the doors are functioning properly and not propped.
But that is not all!
They also have the task of walking people who either do not know how to reach their destination or are afraid to walk alone. The Residential Safety Program at Stony Brook has the duty of preventing or reporting fights that break out, reporting people in need of hospital care, or reporting fires.
The purpose of RSP is to bring a sense of community and safety to the campus and make the students here feel like they are safe and there is always someone around to help them.
The university became very strict in making sure that all the employees are doing their job properly by evaluating their knowledge every two weeks. Also, there are supervisors who walk around checking up on field units to make sure they are doing their job properly, and not slacking off.
Rohan, a supervisor working in RSP had this to say about the program, “You can never really appreciate the work we do here until you join and do it for yourself. It is an integral part of this campus, and whenever someone needs help it is good to see a familiar face you can turn to. We serve as the police’s eyes and ears to ensure help comes as quickly as possible.”
The RSP program runs 24/7 and needs workers for the summer. If you want to join the safety community, then by all means grab an application in Irving College, and join the hundreds of students who are already there. It will be a great opportunity to build social skills, make new friends, and develop leadership abilities.
