I would like to commend the publication for including the April 21 piece on “Five Easy Ways to Go Green.” I think that with the campus aiming to be more environmentally aware and keeping the student body more mindful of environmental issues, it was important to include the information.
I liked how the tips were simple and something that every college student can tackle. But that was also part of my problem, they were so easy. I feel that most people already know the common sense tips that were included but perhaps I’m mistaken. I was also surprised there was not further coverage of the previous weekend’s Earthstock events or even additional environmental information, especially since Earth Day was going to be the next day.
Perhaps the paper should have included more in depth environmental issues and tips; such as the cost and benefits of buying organic food and organic products, the benefits of eco-friendly light bulbs, the issues behind “biofuels” and how they are driving food scarcity and food prices to the brink, statistics on how the U.S. matches up to other countries on the issue of energy consumption, and how global climate change (whether a natural event or human induced) is changing environmental and marine habitats in such drastic ways that our generation will live to see the devastating effects.
With our Southampton campus so completely devoted to sustainability, has The Statesman ever thought of perhaps including a weekly “Environmental News” page or article section?
The Southampton student body is incredibly well informed on such issues and I thought maybe that type of page may help further educate main campus students.
Thank you to the student staff of the Statesman for all of your hard work on the publication for the benefit of the student body. Sincerely, Kayla Montanye
