On Tuesday, April 15, Stony Brook’s mens and womens Tennis teams successfully hosted Quinnipiac in their final non-conference meet. The Men’s team swept the visiting Bobcats 7-0, while the Women’s team won 6-1, with their only loss coming from a defaulted match.
‘Both teams played very well yesterday and it was a real quality win for the women,’ said Coach Gary Glassman. ‘Quinnipiac’s women have won their conference for the last 3 years.’
At the No. 1 position, Sandy Wijeratne and sophomore Paula Rodolfi won their doubles match by a score of 8-0, while senior Victoria Vovsha and freshman Fanny Charliquart won their eighth straight match at the No. 3 spot, 8-2. ‘It is a good feeling to know that we are always going to have solid production at 3rd doubles with Vicki and Fanny,’ said Coach Glassman.
During the meet, Wijeratne became Stony Brook’s winningest women’s player in the team’s history. According to Coach Glassman, she broke Anne Catherine Valle’s record.
In singles play, Rodolfi won her match at the No. 1 position (6-1, 6-1) and sophomore Claudia Sanua won 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 2 position. ‘Paola played her best tennis of the season yesterday,’ said Coach Glassman. ‘Claudia has been playing the best of anybody on the women’s side over the last 3 weeks.’
The next meet for both the men’s and women’s teams will be Saturday, Apr. 19th, when they will play and host their final regular season meet of the season. It will be Wijeratne and senior Victoria Vovsha’s final regular season meet. ‘They have provided a great deal of leadership for the rest of the squad,’ said Coach Glassman. ‘Saturday’s match will be bittersweet as we say farewell to Vicki and Sandy on their Senior Day. We invite everybody to come out and support us!’
