Whether it was their tremendous rally in the second half, or streak-breaking win against a conference rival, Stony Brook’s Women’s Basketball win over Hartford 61-57 made for a good Wednesday night at Pritchard Gymnaisum.
Since 2006, the Hartford Hawks have been a puzzle that the Seawolves cannot solve. 17 matchups have come, and 17 times their America East foe has come out with the victory. All of that has gone out the window with a new streak, a winning one for Wolfie’s finest, as Sabre Proctor paced the home team to a big time confidence boost.
Shooting just 38 percent from the field in the first half against a Hartford team that was putting the ball in the basket with consistency did not seem like the formula for success, and to tell the truth, the Seawolves did not look like a team that would soon mount a furious comeback to beat last year’s America East tournament finalist.
A phenomenal defensive display by Coach O’Boyle’s squad gave Stony Brook an opportunity to hang around, as Hartford only managed 14 points in the second half, while the Seawolves scored 12 points solely from the charity stripe. Hitting on 75 percent of their 16 free throw attempts was huge in clawing their way back into a contest that at half seemed like it would be tough to draw back in.
As has become a tendency for this team, toughness and hard work lead to an advantage on the offensive glass, allowing for second opportunities and trips to the free throw line. 13 more free chances at putting points on the scoreboard is something that any team would love to have, and that was a major factor in erasing a double-digit deficit against one of the chief challenges facing Stony Brook in the conference.
Bettering her season average of 15 points per game, Proctor continued her terrific season in dropping 20 points while still contributing on the glass with six rebounds. The star Junior has continued to show her prowess from long range, not just down low with two-three pointers in the game. For the tenth game in a row, she reached the double-digit plateau, while continuing to lead the team in field goal percentage.
Once again adding grit to the lineup was Sophomore forward Brittany Snow, notching a double-double for the very first time, putting together 13 points and 10 boards in support of Stony Brook’s 10th win of the season. With four huge offensive rebounds, Snow helped create five second chance points which in the end were the difference in the game.
Looking forward to the future for the Seawolves and Coach Beth O’Boyle is an opportunity for revenge, as a trip to New Hampshire on Saturday gives Stony Brook a chance to reverse the result of last year’s America East quarterfinal heartbreaker, before heading to Binghamton for a night game on Wednesday night.
