On Saturday, Stony Brook’s women’s lacrosse team was able to stave off a late rally from American University on its way to a 14-12 win at home.
Senior Diana Caroleo led the Seawolves with a game high five goals. After jumping out to a 7-4 lead, American countered with two goals from Brit Ferguson and Lauren Aksionoff to cut the lead to one heading into the second half.
Both teams opened the second half with two quick goals a piece, before Stony Brook began to pull away. The Seawolves scored six unanswered goals, building their lead to 14-7 with 13:16 remaining in the game. American did not go down quietly, as they scored five unanswered goals of their own, but could only bridge the gap to 14-12 where the game ended.
Jamie Carlson and Mickey Cahill split time in the net for the Seawolves, making five and six saves respectively.
The Seawolves continue their home stand on Wednesday afternoon against the UMBC Retrievers, followed by a match-up with New Hampshire on Saturday, Apr. 5. The Seawolves are 0-1 against America East competition this season, losing their home opener to Vermont.
