UMBC has not scored more than 12 goals this season. On Saturday, they needed 13, and got it. The Retrievers opened up on the Seawolves in a slow paced game that gave Stony Brook few opportunities in their home opener.
UMBC jumped out on top three minutes into the first quarter. Stony Brook responded nearly four minutes later with two goals just seven seconds apart. Senior Ryan Hughes opened up the scoring, followed by Senior Bo Tripodi. Tripodi tallied five goals in the game, with three in the second half.
UMBC jumped back on top with four unanswered goals. Senior Rhys Duch responded soon after with an assist from freshman Jordan McBride. Duch would score two more in the half while also having four helpers to finish the game. Senior Bobby Trenkle scored late in the first half to give the Seawolves the lead, but UMBC responded several seconds later to go into the half knotted at seven.
The second half began with a face off win, followed by a goal by Jordan McBride 10 seconds in. After the teams exchanged goals each, UMBC went on a 6-0 run which lasted 19 minutes to give the Retrievers a 14-9 lead. Tripodi finally scored at the 7:13 mark in the fourth quarter, and again 33 seconds later to pull the Seawolves within three. McBride scored late in the fourth quarter, but the comeback attempt fell short.
The Seawolves committed seven penalties, including one in the fourth quarter with 25 seconds left. They were, however, able to convert on two of UMBC’s three penalties. The Retrievers were 1-7.
The Seawolves return home for another American East match up against the Vermont Catamounts. Vermont holds a 2-7 record on the year with wins against Bellarmine and fellow American East team Hartford. The game begins on Saturday at 4 p.m. at LaValle Stadium.
