The Stony Brook Seawolves track and field team travelled to the city last week to compete in the Last Chance Meet at the Armory Track to take on other America East opponents. This meet was the final opportunity for the Seawolves to lower their qualifying times before the ECAC/IC4A and NCAA Championships. The meet produced one first place finisher, and mostly served as a warm up before the big dance at the NCAA Championships.
Freshman Lucy Van Dalen claimed the only first-place finish with a time of 4:46.50 in the mile. This time was significant because it was just a few tenths of a second slower than the school-record time she posted earlier this month at the Valentine Invitational.
Coach Andrew Ronan appreciated Van Dalen’s effort. “Her work effort over the course of the season earned her a first place finish in the event,” he said.
Sophomores Jessica Hampson and Stephanie Vos took advantage of the meet to compete in races they had yet to run this season. Hampson finished second in the 3,000-meter, good enough to earn an ECAC qualification with a time of 9:48.53. Meanwhile, Vos just missed qualifying in the 800-meter, in which she placed eighth with a time of 2:18.64.
For the men, senior Melvin Genao, improved upon his previous season-best in the 400-meter, taking 38th place with a time of 49.95.
Next weekend should have considerable more action as the Seawolves’ track and field teams travel to Boston, Mass., for the ECAC/IC4A Championships. Coach Ronan expects a very hard fought meet, but thinks his team will leave it all on the track..
