On Saturday Feb. 23, Stony Brook’s women’s basketball team hosted in-state rival Albany. The Lady Seawolves, who came into the game winless in their last eight tries, ultimately lost the game by a score of 65-58. After the loss, Stony Brook’s record fell to 6-19, 1-11 in the conference.
In the first half, the Great Danes outscored the Seawolves by a score of 27-19. Poor shooting once again plagued the Seawolves, as they shot 24.1% off 7-29 shooting. The Great Danes also out-rebounded Stony Brook, 28-20, including 14 offensive boards.
The second half was a different story. Stony Brook shot 45.2%, and took away the Great Danes’ boards advantage, as the Seawolves only had one less rebound in the half. Seven minutes in, Stony Brook managed to take the lead, but couldn’t hold it. The game would stay close for the next ten minutes until Albany pulled away with less than three minutes remaining.
Notable players were seniors Aly Young, who had a game high 18 points, and Dana Ferraro, who recorded her 26th career double-double, with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Ferraro also recorded her 1,000 career rebound, only the second player to do so in school history.
Compared to their past two seasons, this year has been a disappointment for the Seawolves. The Seawolves finished in second place both years, as they recorded a 14-2 conference record last year, 12-4 the year before. However, senior Dana Ferraro who has been a member of the Seawolves since 2004, isn’t phased by her team’s poor season. When asked about the playoffs, ‘Anything can happen’ said Ferraro. ‘Last year UMBC won the tournament after finishing the season seventh in the conference.’ UMBC had a record of 6-10 in the conference last year.
The Lady Seawolves have four games left in their regular season, and currently sit in last place in the America East Conference. The next game for the Lady Seawolves is against Binghamton at home, this Wednesday, at 7:00 PM.
