In the last two years, several members of Stony Brook’s campus community have become victims to the same man. University police described the thief as a ‘well-dressed man’ who enters empty rooms and buildings searching for purses and pocket books.
The man has targeted over eight academic buildings, including the Staller Center, discreetly stealing credit cards so that many victims remain unaware until they receive the bills racked up by the thief.
Photos of the man have been caught on several security cameras located in different parts of the campus.
Assistant Chief Doug Little said that the thief has spent over $25,000 in Target gift cards and tickets from the Long Island Rail Road in Long Island and Queens.’
Little called it ‘a crime of opportunity.’ He stressed that students and faculty should remain aware of their belongings and to act more cautiously. He encouraged students to report any suspicious activity. When you ‘see something, say something,’ Little said.
Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS. A cash reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for tips leading to an arrest.
