The Seawolves will conclude their season as an independent football team by traveling to North Carolina to take on the Elon Phoenix. The Phoenix are currently ranked 4th in the Southern Conference with a 4-3 record, 6-3 overall.
Elon, ranked just outside the top 25 in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Div. I-AA) coaches poll, has played against the previously ranked South Florida Bulls (Football Bowl Subdivision), and the #7 ranked Appalachian State Mountaineers, who are known this year for their upset win over #5 Michigan.
The Phoenix are a proven team. Even with a schedule that includes several nationally ranked opponents, they have played well. Their pass-heavy offense is led by true freshmen Scott Riddle, who has started all 10 games for the Phoenix. He has completed 67 percent of his passes while throwing for 3521 yards (352 average per game) with 29 touchdowns and only 12 interceptions.
Sophomore Terrell Hudgins leads the team with 108 receptions for 1375 yards and 17 touchdowns. They have six other players with at least 100 yards receiving. Riddle also leads the team in rushing yards with 260.
On the defensive side, the Phoenix have surrendered 1985 yards, over 190 yards per game, while allowing 26 touchdowns on the ground. Their passing defense is sound, only giving up an average of 217 yards per game and 15 touchdowns. It appears that the ground attack lead by Brandon Mason, who is off of a 138-yard performance last week, will be key for the SB this weekend.
SB is off of an impressive home victory over CCSU, and will look to keep their winning ways going. They have won three in a row by a combined score of 94-30. The defense, which is allowing 323 passing yards per game, will have to pick up their play this weekend, as passing accounts for over 80 percent of Elon’s offense.
Stony Brook is 6-4 on the season with all four losses coming on the road. The game will be played on Saturday at 3:30 PM in Elon, North Carolina.
