After their first shutout this season and winning their last two, the SBU football team looks to continue their winning ways against the Blue Devils of Central Connecticut State. CCSU brings in a 6-3 overall record, and 4-1 in the Northeast Conference (NEC). The Devils have won four out of their last five and are coming off a victory over fellow NEC opponent Sacred Heart.
SB leads the series between these two teams 6-3. Central Connecticut is currently second in the NEC. They have outscored their opponents in the first half 186-105, but have been outscored 131-104 in the second half.
Their offense is dominated by the ground attack, rushing for 2804 yards in nine games, an average of 288 yards per game. They have seven players with over 100 yards rushing, and four players with over 300 yards, including Jo Jo Freeman, who has run for 726 yards. They have only attempted 175 on the year for 1223 yards. They play two quarterbacks, one a senior and one a sophomore, who split time in games.
On the defensive side, the Devils have only given up 1280 yards on the ground, while allowing 1591 yards in the air. Chris Stimmel leads the team with 79 tackles from his linebacker position (20 solo).’ As a team, they have 18 sacks, and 11 interceptions.
SB comes off a 30-0 beating of Bryant last Saturday. In a game in which the Seawolves gained 458 total yards and 280 on the ground, they kept Bryant’s offense to only nine first downs.
Running back Conte Cuttino and quarterback Josh Dudash both had impressive games, and will need to continue their strong play against a quality defense. The Seawolves should be in for a good game. A very good rushing attack for Central Connecticut will try to be countered by SBU’s 3-4 defense. The linebackers should have an event filled day.
The Seawolves lost to the Blue Devils 35-32 last year. We can look for a similar high scoring affair this year. The game starts at 1:00 PM at LaValle Stadium on Saturday, and listened to on 107.1 WLIR.
