In West Hartford, Conn. on Friday, Oct. 19, the Seawolves volleyball team beat Hartford for their fifth consecutive win. Stony Brook maintained their winning streak by shutting out Hartford in just three sets with scores of 30-28, 30-25, and 30-22.
Contributing to this outstanding display of volleyball was Jackie Ahlers and her match-high of 15 kills. Ahlers also registered a hitting percentage of .429 and was one of four Seawolves to achieve double-figure kills. Senior Morgan Sweany supplied 14 kills for the Seawolves while sophomore Linda Weber and senior Amy Oleksiej each recorded 11.
The first match was over fairly quickly. When the score was tied at 11 the Seawolves opened up a 7-2 run, highlighted by two kills from Weber, to force a Hartford timeout. The Hawks would rally to within one point at 29-28, but the Seawolves got a kill from Weber to close out the game and seize a 1-0 lead.
SB grabbed the lead early on in the second set, and the Hawks would once again come back to take the lead at 16-15 because of a Seawolves attack error. The lead would go back and forth for a little while before SB took the lead for good at 21-20 after a Hartford attack error. The Hawks would stay close but the Seawolves ultimately broke away for a 30-25 victory.
The Seawolves were ahead most of the way in set three but could not break away from the Hawks until later on in it. After putting together an 8-2 run from two kills apiece by Sweany and Weber, SB held a 28-20 lead. The Seawolves closed out the match a few points later on a kill from Ahlers.
The Seawolves advanced to 17-7 overall and 5-1 in the America East standings while the Hawks fall to 7-17 and 0-6. SB will continue on with their season to come home and host Hartford Sunday afternoon and then host Albany on Friday, Oct. 26.
