The softball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday to conference rival UMBC. The losses dropped the team to 26-16 overall, and 10-6 in conference play.
The first game was a 5-0 defeat. UMBC jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the second inning and they never looked back. Starter Ashley Gray went the full seven innings and allowed only five hits. SBU starter Sarah Hoffman was victimized by two errors committed by shortstop Victoria Kavitsky. Hoffman gave up five runs, only two of which were earned, while allowing eight hits and striking out three over seven innings. Leftfielder Ashley Westphal went 2-3 on the day, and also drew a walk.
In the second game, UMBC once again jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings. After falling behind 5-0, SBU came up with a three run rally in the bottom of the fourth to make the game close. Westphal singled the right to drive in the first run, and Kavitsky drove in the next two with a double to left center.
UMBC added their sixth and final run in the top of the fifth to provide the final margin. Ashley Gray picked up her second win of the day after allowing three runs and seven hits while pitching into the fourth inning. SBU starter Alyssa Struzenberg was tagged with the loss, which dropped her record on the season to 6-5. She was unable to get through the fourth inning. She allowed five hits, five runs, and walked eight hitters on the day. She also hit a batter and threw two wild pitches. Westphal and third baseman Kelly Oberto led the SBU offense with two hits each.
The team hosts Marist for two games on May 3, and travels to
