The Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team, led by Amy Taylor’s five goals and one assist, emerged victorious, 16-12, over Sacred Heart this past Wednesday afternoon in Fairfield, Conn. Seven different Seawolves netted goals during the game, and six of those seven players recorded at least a pair of goals. The win improved the Seawolves’ record to 4-1 on the young season, while the loss dropped Sacred Heart’s record to 1-3.
The goal of the contest was scored at the 25:02 mark by the Pioneers’ off an unassisted tally by Amanda Williams. However, nearly 30 seconds later, Kaitlin Leggio fired a shot into the back of the Pioneer net to square the game one goal apiece.
At the 19:43 mark, Sacred Heart regained the lead off of a Maureen Hohn goal. The Seawolves responded to this score by running off three consecutive goals, two from senior Katie Savino and one from sophomore Jenna Celano. This outburst gave Stony Brook a 4-2. This lead didn’t last very long as the two teams traded goals and momentum for the remainder of the half and went into intermission knotted at 6-6.
Despite the fact that SB took twice as many shots in the first period then Sacred Heart did, 22-11, the accurate Pioneer shooting kept them very much alive in the contest.
When the second half began, Leggio netted her second goal of the game with 28:04 remaining on the clock. This score gave the Seawolves the lead, the momentum, and, ultimately, the victory.
The Pioneers didn’t go down without putting up a struggle. At the 10:04 mark, the Pioneers had narrowed the SB lead to 10-8 after a goal from Mary Montesarchio. Yet the combination of Taylor and Leggio refused to let SB relinquish their lead. The Seawolves scored six goals in the final 5:25 of the game to give themselves the 16-12 win.
The duo of Taylor and Leggio accounted for 12 points in the contest as Taylor netted five goals and added an assist while Leggio dished four assists and added two goals. Senior Emily Jaissle aided the team’s victory by contributing two goals and an assist to the effort. Jen Sandtorv recorded six saves on 23 total Pioneer shots. The Seawolves made 13 less turnovers and out-shot the opposition by a 38-23 margin for the game.
The Seawolves’ next game is scheduled for Saturday, Mar. 17, when they host Monmouth at 4:00 PM. The game will be the second half of a lacrosse doubleheader at LaValle Stadium as the men’s squad is facing off against Penn St. at 1:00 PM.
