Following a convincing weekend, the Stony Brook softball team dropped a tough game to a non-conference opponent.
On Wednesday, the Seawolves (12-17, 7-5 CAA) were at Bahoshy Field in the Bronx, N.Y. for a game against the Fordham Rams (17-16, 7-2 A10). Stony Brook fell behind early and was never able to recover, losing 7-4.
In the first inning, the Rams wasted no time getting on the board. Following a pair of singles and a walk allowed by starting pitcher Gabrielle Maday, Fordham catcher Nicki Sudall dug in with the bases loaded and drove a single down the right field line. The knock plated a pair and gave Fordham a 2-0 lead right out of the chute.
The bottom half of the second frame saw the Rams dominate offensively again. With the bases loaded, Fordham designated hitter Sydney Wells lofted a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home the third Rams’ run and make it 3-0.
A few batters later, Sudall delivered yet again off of Maday with another run-scoring knock. This time, she drilled a double to stretch Fordham’s advantage to four. Then, Fordham shortstop Kate Mcguire drove in a pair with a two-run single up the middle to put the game out of reach at 6-0.
Down big going into the top half of the third, catcher Emily Reinstein got the Seawolves on the board, launching a leadoff home run off Fordham starting pitcher Olivia Simcoe.
The Rams took just an inning to respond, as in the bottom of the fourth inning, Wells came through with a home run off of relief pitcher Maddie Male, making it 7-1.
From there, the Seawolves bats fell quiet down the stretch. In the top half of the seventh, Stony Brook put two runners on, allowing second baseman Naiah Ackerman to get them within striking distance on a three-run bomb. However the Stony Brook rally failed to go any further, as Simcoe recorded the final out handing the Seawolves a 7-4 defeat.
The Seawolves offense — outside of the home runs from Reinstein and Ackerman — were unable to get much production off Simcoe, who went the distance and got the win allowing four runs on eight hits.
Reinstein finished the day 2-for-3 with a home run and a double. Center fielder Alyssa Costello was the only other Stony Brook player with multiple hits, going 2-for-4. Ackerman tallied three runs batted in, with the homer being her only hit in three trips.
On the pitching end Maday struggled, only throwing two innings and allowed six runs on eight hits. Male provided stability in relief, going the final four frames while allowing just one run on five hits.
The Seawolves look forward to this weekend, when they continue their Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) schedule by hosting the North Carolina A&T Aggies for a three-game set at University Field. While the Aggies are having a season worth forgetting — holding a record of 9-24 with an abysmal 2-10 record in CAA action — they are coming off a series win against Towson. First pitch for the first two games is set for 1 p.m. The series finale on Sunday is scheduled to start at noon.
