Coming off a close loss, the No. 22 Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team resumed Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play and its conference win streak.
Recovering from the stunning defeat, the Seawolves (6-3, 2-0 CAA) headed to Newark, Del. to face the Delaware Blue Hens on Sunday. Although it got off to a rocky start, Stony Brook was able to find its footing and defeated its league foes 16-8.
The Seawolves had an uncharacteristic opening half against a CAA opponent. Although they still led 7-6 after 30 minutes of play, their usual dominance — which has propelled the Seawolves to the longest active winning streak over conference opponents across all NCAA Division I sports — had not been displayed yet.
Nonetheless, Stony Brook’s individual talent showed, highlighted by a second-period hat trick by attacker Charlotte Wilmoth. Alongside attacker Riley McDonald — another transfer acquisition by head coach Joe Spallina, who otherwise rarely utilizes the portal — Wilmoth spearheaded the Seawolves’ attack on Sunday. The tandem combined for seven goals and six assists, with Wilmoth registering four of each stat.
A third transfer addition — midfielder Braeden Siverson — also made a huge impact for Stony Brook. With its draw unit struggling thus far this season, Spallina turned to Siverson — who has not had that many reps this year. The move turned out to be a smart one, as Siverson tallied a team-high and individual season-high six draw controls, leading the Seawolves to a 16-10 advantage in that department against the Blue Hens.
Besides the trio’s contributions, goalkeeper Natalia Altebrando showed out. Delaware’s offense — which scored four goals in the first period alone — could not exceed that number in the remaining three frames combined. In the final three quarters, Altebrando made seven saves. In the second period, particularly, the Blue Hens attack and star attacker Delaney McDaniel’s efforts proved futile against Altebrando, who stopped five attempts in the frame.
Delaware actually struck first in the third quarter, tying the contest up at seven apiece. However, thereafter, Stony Brook embarked on its best stretch of 2025 thus far. The Seawolves scored five times in a 3:38 stretch, with four unique goalscorers chipping in, while attacker Casey Colbert netted a pair — the first and last goals of the incredible run.
Now with a 12-7 lead, Stony Brook was able to cruise to victory for the remainder of the period and the entire final frame, in which it outscored the Blue Hens 4-1 in.
Spallina did not speak to the media after the game.
The Seawolves outshot Delaware 31 (23 shots on goal) to 17 (16 shots on goal).
Altebrando finished with eight saves for a .500 save percentage. Conversely, Delaware goalkeeper Steph Marszal stopped seven shots for a .304 mark.
Midfielder Alexandra Fusco tallied a hat trick to tie a career-high in goals. Defensively, defender Avery Hines put up four caused turnovers and four ground balls.
For the Blue Hens, attacker Halen Saroney (hat trick) and attacker Jaclyn Marszal (four assists) — Steph’s sister, making two of a set of triplets — were their top performers offensively.
Stony Brook will return to non-conference action on Wednesday. At Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium, it will host the Vermont Catamounts, who are 4-6 overall and 0-2 in America East play — the Seawolves’ former league — following a 14-13 loss to the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Opening draw is scheduled for noon.
