In a game it never led, the Stony Brook women’s basketball team was outclassed in every regard in its third-straight defeat.
Hitting the road in Buies Creek, N.C., the Seawolves (11-14, 6-8 CAA) immediately fell behind facing the Campbell Camels (16-10, 9-5 CAA) on Sunday afternoon. While guard Breauna Ware erupted for a career-high 30 points, it was not enough for Stony Brook to overcome the 76-51 loss.
In the first period, Campbell guards Gianni Boone and Jasmine Felton took control for the Camels, each sinking early layups to take a 6-0 lead. After multiple missed shots, guard Zaida Gonzalez finally put the Seawolves on the board with a jumper at the 6:15 mark.
Campbell’s relentless attack in the paint continued, with Felton and Boone applying pressure and extending the lead to double digits at 17-5. A three-pointer by Ware cut into the deficit momentarily, but the Camels responded immediately with another scoring run. By the end of the quarter, Campbell led 23-12.
Stony Brook’s offense regained its footing slightly in the second quarter, with forward Dallysshya Moreno and Ware notching baskets to keep the Seawolves within striking distance. However, every time the Seawolves strung together a run, Campbell had an answer. Forward Courtney Dahlquist and Boone continued to punish Stony Brook inside, pushing the lead back to double figures.
A crafty finish at the rim and a late three-pointer from Ware trimmed the deficit to less than 10 with just over three minutes left in the half, but Campbell closed the period strong. Turnovers and a poor fast-break defense from the Seawolves allowed the Camels to take a 37-27 lead into halftime.
The third period proved to be decisive, as Campbell broke the game open in the opening minutes. Picking up from where they left off, Felton and Boone wasted no time re-establishing their dominance, combining for an early 8-0 run that extended the lead beyond 15 points.
Stony Brook had no answers defensively, as Campbell continued to find success in the paint and in transition. A jumper by Ware stopped the bleeding, but the Camels responded with a deep three-pointer from guard Audrey Fuller and another strong finish by Felton. By the time the quarter ended, Campbell had extended its lead to 55-38.
The final frame was more of the same, with Campbell maintaining complete control. The Camels capitalized on Stony Brook’s missed opportunities, pushing the lead beyond 20 points with consistent finishes inside. Despite a few late buckets from Ware and King, the Seawolves never mounted a comeback, ultimately falling 76-51.
Head coach Joy McCorvey did not speak to the media after the game.
Stony Brook shot a dismal .351/.200/.615 on the night, while Campbell torched the nets with a .604/.250/.818 shooting split. Campbell also outmatched Stony Brook in rebounding (33-24), points in the paint (58-28) and fast-break points (17-2).
Ware was the lone bright spot, leading the team with 30 points on 11-for-24 shooting while also grabbing seven rebounds. King added nine points and nine rebounds, but no other Seawolf managed more than five points.
The Camels’ offense was led by Felton, who posted 17 points, four steals and three rebounds. Boone added 13 points and three rebounds, while Alexander provided a strong presence off the bench with 18 points on an impressive 9-for-11 shooting.
Stony Brook — who remains near the bottom of the conference standings — will look to improve in seeding against the Delaware Blue Hens who are only a win ahead in the standings. The Blue Hens are 10-15 overall and 7-8 in conference play following a 71-55 rout at the hands of North Carolina A&T on Sunday. Opening tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
