
Taking on an in-state rival, the No. 14 Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team extended its regular season winning streak to 13.
The Seawolves (3-0) ended their opening stretch of away games with a 16-10 win over the University at Albany Great Danes (0-4) on Sunday. Attackers Charlotte Wilmoth and Riley McDonald, as well as midfielder Isabella Caporuscio, accounted for 13 of the 16 Stony Brook scores.
While Albany held a 4-3 lead at the end of the first quarter, an offensive push from Stony Brook that saw them score seven times closed the half with a four goal cushion. The Seawolves quickly tied things up at five just two and a half minutes into the second quarter, when Wilmoth took a pass from midfielder Alexandra Fusco and put it in the back of the net. After the two sides traded goals, Stony Brook scored five straight goals to take a 10-5 lead with Wilmoth delivering the go-ahead score.
Coming out of halftime with a 10-6 lead, the Seawolves immediately padded their lead when McDonald and Fusco each netted scores within the first five minutes of the back half of play. In all, Stony Brook outscored the Great Danes 3-2 in both the third and fourth quarters, respectively, to secure the victory.
Head coach Joe Spallina did not speak to the media after the game.
Stony Brook dominated in draw controls, as it finished +7 on the day (18-11). It also outshot the Great Danes 34-21.
McDonald led the Seawolves’ offense, finishing with five goals. Wilmoth and Caporuscio each narrowly trailed her tally, each posting four finishes.
Defender Casey Colbert chipped in on offense with three assists, while Caporuscio set up a pair of goals herself.
Albany attacker Ava Poupard proved to be the standout forward for the Great Danes, leading her team in scoring with a hat trick.
Colbert was a standout defender for Stony Brook on Sunday, picking up three ground balls.
Goalie Francesca Viteritti played all 60 minutes in net for the Seawolves, stopping six of the 16 shots she faced. Her opposite number — Albany goalie Quinn McCarthy — was subbed out for goalie Grace Cincebox for the fourth quarter. McCarthy made six saves of a possible 19, while Cincebox stopped only one of the four shots she saw.
The Seawolves will head back to Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium and prepare to welcome the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays on Saturday for its home opener. The Blue Jays have gone 2-2 on the year and will head to Long Island, N.Y. after beating the University of Pennsylvania 15-14 in overtime. Opening draw is set for noon.
