Midfielder Isabella Caporuscio began her sophomore year on a high note, propelling the No. 13/14 Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team to a victory in its season opener for a third campaign running.
In a convincing road display, the Seawolves (1-0) defeated the Bryant Bulldogs (1-1) in Smithfield, R.I. on Wednesday afternoon. Caporuscio did it all for Stony Brook — tallying six goals, two assists, four ground balls, four caused turnovers and six draw controls — in a 16-12 win.
Caporuscio and transfer acquisition attacker Charlotte Wilmoth got the season started in a big way for the Seawolves. Each notched at least a hat trick in the first half, with the former netting five scores in the game’s opening 30 minutes. Stony Brook found a lot of success in woman-up scenarios in particular, scoring four goals in that matter in the first half alone.
Up 9-4 at the start of the third period, the Seawolves remained with their foot on the gas pedal. They ripped off a three-goal run to extend their lead to eight just over four minutes into the frame. However, following Stony Brook’s burst, Bryant got into a rhythm for the first time all afternoon. Despite struggling to win draw controls, the Bulldogs were able to force several Seawolves turnovers in the latter stage of the third period.
In doing so, the hosts created more scoring chances and capitalized on four, trimming its deficit to 13-8 at the end of the period. Continuing to put on the pressure, Bryant midfielder Emily DeGeorge scored twice in quick succession after Wilmoth opened the final frame with a goal, making it a four-goal contest. However, it was too-little, too-late for the Bulldogs. Stony Brook stalled enough time to maintain a perfect record of 5-0 all-time against Bryant.
“Happy for our team to be 1-0,” head coach Joe Spallina said in a postgame interview with Stony Brook Athletics. “We went up by eight and let our foot off the gas and the game finished closer than it should of. That is something that we will learn from and get better. Took a little time for us to adjust playing on the smaller field and with the lighting but our offense performed at a high level. We expect our defense to be better than we were today and that will be a point of emphasis this week. Overall, 1-0 and onto the next one.”
The Seawolves outshot their opponents 28 to 20. They won the draw battle 17-12 and scooped up 18 ground balls to the Bulldogs’ 14. Stony Brook also committed 18 turnovers compared to Bryant’s 21.
Goalkeepers Natalia Altebrando and Francesca Viteritti split 30 minutes for the Seawolves in the cage, combining for seven saves. Conversely, Bryant goalkeeper Sam Centofante played all 60 for the Bulldogs and made nine stops.
Alongside Caporuscio and Wilmoth — who put four balls in the back of the net — attackers Haydin Eisfeld, Courtney Maclay and Casey Colbert alongside midfielders and sisters Alexandra Fusco and Julia Fusco scored for Stony Brook, with Alexandra Fusco netting a pair.
Caporuscio, Wilmoth, Colbert and midfielder Molly LaForge gave out two assists. Eisfeld, Alexandra Fusco and Maclay dished one out apiece.
DeGeorge spearheaded Bryant’s offensive effort with six goals.
For the second of three away affairs to begin their year, the Seawolves will take on the Villanova Wildcats in Philadelphia, P.A. on Wednesday. The Wildcats are 2-0 in 2025 and will play Saint Joseph’s before hosting Stony Brook. Opening draw for next week’s matchup is set for 1 p.m.
