The Stony Brook men’s basketball team was outplayed across the board in its eighth straight loss.
The Seawolves (4-16, 0-7 CAA) remained winless in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play when it hosted the Campbell Camels (9-11, 4-3 CAA) on Thursday night at Stony Brook Arena. Stony Brook could not recover from giving up 41 points in the first half, eventually falling 79-54.
Forwards Ben Wight and Andre Snoddy picked up the offensive slack for the Seawolves early on, combining for the team’s first nine points. However, with their running mates struggling, and Campbell forward Colby Duggan and guard Cam Gregory on fire, Campbell took a 13-9 lead just over six minutes and a half into the game.
After guard Joe Octave knocked down a pair of free throws to trim Stony Brook’s deficit to two, the momentum fully shifted towards the Camels. They embarked on a 25-5 run over the next 10 minutes. The Seawolves had no answer for a dynamic Campbell offense that was able to score with ease from all three levels.
On the other end of the floor, Stony Brook’s offense failed to find a rhythm. It constantly chucked up shots and committed careless turnovers en route to a 38-16 disadvantage. After the Seawolves strung together consecutive scoring possessions for the first time in a long time — although one featured Wight splitting a trip to the charity stripe — the Camels had the final say of the first half, with forward Eric Van Der Heijden draining a deep three-pointer to make it a 41-19 contest after 20 minutes.
Although Stony Brook’s offense was parallel with Campbell’s for much of the latter frame, it was too little, too late for the hosts. The Seawolves failed to draw any closer than 17 points for the affair’s remainder, as the Camels’ high-octane offense kept its foot on the gas pedal.
“Give Campbell credit, they were good early,” head coach Geno Ford said in a postgame interview with Stony Brook Athletics. “We have had a hard time versus pressure all year.”
Stony Brook’s eight-game losing streak is the program’s longest dating back to the 2007-08 season, when the Seawolves lost 10 consecutive contests.
The hosts posted a lackluster .412/.235/.615 shooting line alongside 12 turnovers. Campbell registered an outstanding .569/.435/.750 triple slash to go with 10 giveaways.
The Seawolves were dominated on the glass, as they were outrebounded 33-24.
Only Snoddy and Wight broke double-digits in points for Stony Brook. The former led the charge with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field, while the latter followed suit with 10 points on 4-of-7 efficiency and broke 1,000 career points.
Conversely, Duggan lit up the scoreboard for the Camels, scoring 27 points on 11-of-14 shooting, including 5-for-7 from beyond the arch.
Searching for their first win in over a month, the Seawolves will remain at Stony Brook Arena for a battle of bottom feeders in the CAA against the North Carolina A&T Aggies on Saturday night. The Aggies are 4-17 overall and winless in eight tries in conference action this season. They are coming off a 83-67 loss to Towson. Opening tip-off is set for noon.
