After back-to-back weekend losses, the Stony Brook women’s tennis team was shut down again by a fellow Long Island team.
The Seawolves (2-10) faced the LIU Sharks (5-5) in Port Washington, N.Y. on Sunday and were conquered 6-1. Stony Brook dropped the doubles point and could not take control in singles play, having only one victory by Cornelia Bruu-Syversen.
The Seawolves did not have power against the Sharks in doubles matches, losing the point with one match going unfinished. A new duo, Dasha Perfiliev and Sara Medved, were defeated by Clara Tardivel and Mia Tsoukalas 6-3. Mia Palladino and Elena Lobo-Corral paired up to face Leo Boisseau and Lucy Garrigues, but they fell 6-1 and made their pairing record 0-3.
Kristi Boro and Debby Mastrodima were up against Saki Oyama and Kate Jorjoliani, but the match went unfinished.
Just like in doubles, Stony Brook couldn’t find their luck in singles play. However, it was not for lack of effort from Lobo-Corral, who pushed her match against Garrigues into three sets. Garrigues took the first set 7-6, winning the tiebreaker 7-4, but Lobo-Corral came back 6-3 in the second set. Lobo-Corral kept extending the final set, but eventually Garrigues won 11-9.
Palladino and Perfiliev were both shut out in their first sets. Palladino faced Boisseau, who first showed up Palladino 6-0, then 6-2 to win the match. Perfiliev had a similar fate with Tsoukalas. Tsoukalas defeated Perfiliev in 6-0 and 6-1 sets. Medved did not get the chance to take one game versus Tardivel. Tardivel swept Medved in two 6-0 sets. Boro did not get shut out, but Oyama was still victorious. Boro endured a 6-1 loss in the first set and Oyama finished the match with a 6-3 second set.
Freshman Bruu-Syversen was the Seawolves’ most valuable player on Sunday, grabbing the team one point in her singles match against Jorjoliani. Bruu-Syversen beat Jorjoliani 7-5 in the first set and stole the match in a 6-1 second set.
After the loss, head coach Thiago Dualiby said he is looking forward to developing the team’s skills more before the season ends. “We competed from beginning to end, but we didn’t execute at the level we needed to beat LIU,” Dualiby said in a postgame interview with The Statesman. “We’ll go back to the practice court to keep improving towards April and the conference, where we want to be playing our best tennis of the season.“
Stony Brook will stay in New York this week and hope to break their losing streak this Thursday when they face the Saint John’s Red Storm. The Red Storm is 5-5 this season, after losing to Brown 0-4 on Mar. 10. The matches are set to begin at 12 p.m.
