In a back-and-forth Battle of Long Island, the Stony Brook women’s soccer team was unable to come out with a victory.
The 13th women’s soccer meeting between the Seawolves (7-3-3, 2-1-2 CAA) and the Hofstra Pride (4-2-6, 2-1-2 CAA) on Sunday was a close affair at Captains Field in Hempstead, N.Y. Tied for much of the game, the two sides were unable to prevent a 1-1 stalemate as time dwindled down.
Setting the tempo early on, forward Luciana Setteducate wasted no time applying the pressure on the Pride’s defense within the game’s opening minute. In a move littered with flair, she flicked the ball over Hofstra defender Gabriella Marte before unleashing a shot that forced a diving save from goalkeeper Synne Danielsen to keep the game scoreless.
In the 16th minute, a Stony Brook foul at midfield queued up the ball for Marte, who was able to ping a pass over the top of the Seawolves’ defense and eventually find attacking midfielder Ellie Gough. Gough then set up midfielder Millie Davies, who pounded the ball into the back of Stony Brook’s net with a shot from just past the penalty arc to make it 1-0.
Marte’s playmaking ability was once again on display with less than 10 minutes until halftime, when she fed another free kick from the midfield to attacking midfielder Hailey Moschitta. She unleashed a shot that forced goalkeeper Nicolette Pasquarella to produce an agile, two-handed stop, keeping the Seawolves’ deficit at one goal.
With under a minute remaining until the break, midfielder Linn Beck attempted to outdo Davies with a longshot of her own. After passing the ball to Setteducate on the edge of the box to set up the one-two, Beck rifled a shot with precision that nestled into the top right corner of Hofstra’s net and leveled the scoring at one goal apiece.
After halftime, Stony Brook dominated offensively with 13 shots to the Pride’s one. However, a tiebreaker was not meant to be that day, as the battle finished level at 1-1.
“It’s never easy to play at Hofstra,” head coach Tobias Bischof said in a postgame interview with Stony Brook Athletics. They are a well-coached team. We started good but lost our way a little bit after they scored. Linn scored a beauty just before halftime. At halftime we regrouped, got focused and played a very good second half. We were unfortunate to not score a second goal.”
Overall, the Seawolves outshot Hofstra 20 (eight shots on goal) to eight (five shots on goal). While manning the net, Pasquarella made four saves and Danielsen collected seven stops on the eight shots she faced.
Beck and Gough remain tied for fifth in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) with five goals each this season.
Setteducate took top spot in the CAA for assists, as she picked up her seventh of season. Conversely, Gough and midfielder Dagny Run Petursdottir both bagged an assist on the day.
The next test for the Seawolves will come against the Hampton Pirates at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Thursday. The Pirates are 3-9-1 overall and 0-5 in 2024 CAA play. They are coming off a 3-0 loss to the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Opening kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
