The Stony Brook men’s soccer team suffered the program’s worst defeat in 23 years.
In 2001, the Seawolves (2-5-3, 0-3-2) were crushed by Albany in 6-0 fashion, which, at the time, marked their most lopsided loss since they competed at the Division II level. Over two decades later, members of that Stony Brook squad can find solace in the fact that history finally repeated itself, as, on Saturday, the Campbell Fighting Camels (6-2-4, 2-1-1) handed the Seawolves a 6-0 thumping in North Carolina.
While Stony Brook’s players endured misery, six unique goalscorers celebrated for the opposing side. Defender Owen Mikoy, forward Luc Lavielle, defender Jake Roberts, midfielder Tai-Reece Chisholm, midfielder Curtis De Leon — from the penalty spot — and defender Carson Pina, respectively, combined to register Campbell’s largest margin of victory since 2021, when it beat Winthrop 7-0.
Head coach Ryan Anatol did not speak to the media after the game.
The Seawolves’ 14-5 disadvantage in shot attempts was their most significant of the year. Adding to the match’s unbalanced nature, they only landed a pair of shots on goal compared to 11 by the Camels.
Despite conceding six goals — the most he has allowed in his collegiate career, whether at Yavapai College or Stony Brook — goalkeeper Rushon Sandy was arguably the Seawolves’ standout performer, speaking to the team’s struggles.
Sandy tied a season-high with six saves. Conversely, Campbell’s goalkeeper Samy Slimi had no issue handling both attempts that came his way and recorded his fourth clean sheet of 2024.
Stony Brook will need to quickly shake off the embarrassment if it hopes to contend for a 2024 Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Championship berth. Currently, the Seawolves sit second-to-last in the conference standings with three CAA games to go. Below them, last-place Northeastern holds a game in hand.
However, Stony Brook will return to non-conference action first. On Tuesday, it will host the No. 11 Seton Hall Pirates at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. Seton Hall has a 8-1-1 record this year and are coming off a 1-0 victory over Marquette. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 6:31 p.m.
