After allowing back-to-back goals in the final 10 minutes of the match, the Stony Brook women’s soccer team had to settle for a single point.
On the heels of a big win against Campbell, the Seawolves (7-3-2, 2-1-1 CAA) hosted the Monmouth Hawks (6-1-5, 2-0-2 CAA) Thursday night at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. Both defenses stood strong through the first half before each side tallied two goals a piece in the second half, resulting in a 2-2 draw.
Stony Brook drew first blood in the 48th minute when it earned a free kick at the halfway line of the pitch. Defender Kerry Pearson delivered a perfect hit, finding forward Reilly Rich. With her back facing the goal, Rich headed the ball toward the middle, connecting with midfielder Linn Beck. Beck then cut the ball back towards her left, setting up forward Luciana Setteducate for an easy score.
The score remained 1-0 until the 76th minute when Monmouth defender Grace Notarfrancesco fouled defender Emanuelly Ferreira, setting up a penalty kick. On the free attempt, Rich shot left as Monmouth goalkeeper Cassie Coster dove to the right, putting the Seawolves up 2-0.
Stony Brook’s advantage did not last long, as the Hawks cut into the lead when Monmouth defender Chloe Ferreira found the back of the net just four minutes later, beating goalkeeper Nicolette Pasquarella to make it 2-1.
In the 87th minute, Monmouth found its equalizer. Monmouth forward Summer Reimet tapped a pass across the box to forward Ashley Lavrich. Lavrich delivered a right-legged boot past Pasquarella to knot the score at two apiece with just over three minutes to play.
“I thought we started the second half better than they did,” head coach Tobias Bischof said in a postgame interview with The Statesman. “I feel like a lot of their shots came in the final 10 minutes when we were two goals up. We started to panic a little bit and therefore gave up a few more chances.”
The Seawolves were outshot 17 (11 shots on goal) to 12 (nine shots on goal).
Pasquarella had a solid night. Although she allowed two goals, she posted a season-high nine saves. In goal for Monmouth, Coster posted six saves and allowed a pair of goals.
Stony Brook will make the short trip to Hempstead on Sunday for the next Battle of Long Island against Hofstra. The Pride have gone 4-2-5 overall and are 2-1-1 in CAA play after a draw against the Drexel on Thursday. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
