Two goals in a seven-minute span elevated the Stony Brook women’s soccer team to above .500 in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play once again.
Hoping to bounce back from a narrow defeat in Elon, N.C. last time out, the Seawolves (7-3-1, 2-1 CAA) traveled south to Buies Creek, N.C. to take on the Campbell Fighting Camels (4-4-3, 2-1 CAA). After trailing at the half, a slight offensive avalanche turned things around for Stony Brook in a 2-1 win.
In the 28th minute, Campbell forward Kaleigh Backlund got her team on the board off an assist from midfielder Emely Rubio — the only goal of the period. However, the Seawolves were the more dangerous side, as they outshot the Camels 7-5 after 45 minutes.
Stony Brook’s advantage increased in the second half, as it attempted 13 shots to just a pair from Campbell. Contrary to the first half, the Seawolves broke through. In the 50th minute, defender Sammy Hannwacker found forward Luciana Setteducate, who scored to make it 1-1.
Just seven minutes later, midfielder Linn Beck gave Stony Brook the lead off a pass from forward Gabrielle Côté, which turned out to be enough to earn it all three points.
“I thought we played well today and it’s never easy to win an away game,” head coach Tobias Bischof said in a postgame interview with Stony Brook Athletics. “Unfortunately, we got scored on against the run of play in the first half. In the second half, the team reacted and did very well to score twice and come from behind to win.”
Overall, the Seawolves outshot their opposition 20 (six shots on goal) to seven (two shots on goal).
Goalkeeper Nicolette Pasquarella made one save. Conversely, Campbell’s shot stopper — goalkeeper JLo Varada — kept three shots out.
Stony Brook will return home to Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Thursday, when it welcomes the Monmouth Hawks. The Hawks are 6-1-4 overall and 2-0-1 in the CAA this season and are coming off a 2-1 win over Northeastern. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
