The Stony Brook women’s soccer team has outscored its last two opponents nine to zero.
Back on the road, the Seawolves (4-2-1) matched up with the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Lowell River Hawks (1-4-2) in Lowell, Mass. on Thursday. Stony Brook dominated on both ends with a 4-0 win.
It did not take long for the Seawolves to strike first, as midfielder Linn Beck got the team on the board in the seventh minute. Following a poor clear from UMass Lowell goalkeeper Taylor Burgess, Stony Brook was awarded a throw-in in the final third of the pitch. Forward Luciana Setteducate was the eventual recipient of the dead-ball opportunity and found forward Reilly Rich open on the edge of the goalie box. With plenty of space, Rich launched a shot toward the goal that Beck deflected past Burgess to put the Seawolves up 1-0.
Just over 10 minutes later, Stony Brook was given a free kick in the midfield after UMass Lowell forward Lærke Niklasson was called for a foul. In the 18th minute, defender Kerry Pearson lined up for the set-piece opportunity and delivered. She placed the ball perfectly at the feet of Beck, who made a precise pass to forward Gabrielle Côté, allowing her to tap it into the net.
The offense continued to pour it on the River Hawks’ defense, winning every 50/50 ball and staying aggressive on the counterattack. With the entire left field to herself in the 24th minute, Côté raced towards the goal with only one defender in her sights. She passed the ball to a streaking Setteducate, who swiftly got past her defender and sank another shot past Burgess.
Burgess’ rough day continued soon after, as Stony Brook’s fourth and final goal came just under eight minutes later. While attempting to pass the ball to a teammate, Burgess turned it over almost instantly, giving the Seawolves a chance to score yet again. Midfielder Hedvig Helling won the ball and dribbled from the sidelines to the goal, threading the needle to score her first goal of the year.
Down 4-0, Burgess was replaced by goalkeeper Rachel Welch, who kept Stony Brook at bay during the second half with five saves.
“I’m very happy with our performance today,” head coach Tobias Bischof said in a postgame interview with Stony Brook Athletics. “We were defensively strong, holding [UMass Lowell] to only three shots on goal and offensively we created a lot of opportunities and had 26 shots. It was a whole team effort and that is always great to see as a coach.”
For the second straight game, the Seawolves outclassed their opponents on both ends, as they outshot the River Hawks 26 (14 shots on goal) to five (three shots on goal). Stony Brook’s defensive unit only allowed two shots in the second half.
Offensively, many got in on the action, as both Beck and Côté recorded a goal and an assist. Setteducate led the team with six shots and also notched a goal, while Helling scored the first goal of her collegiate career. Rich pitched in as well by adding an assist.
Stony Brook’s road trip will continue in Durham, N.H. on Sunday against another America East opponent — the New Hampshire Wildcats. The Wildcats are 5-1-1 in 2024 and are coming off a 1-0 win against Boston University on Sunday. Opening kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
